C has a best friend. It is her blankie. D's mom made C this Care Bear blanket before she was even born and over the past several months C and the blankie have become one. She goes nowhere without it. She eats, sleeps, and plays with her blankie.
The other day, C fell down outside and came running in the house crying. I bent down and stretched my arms out to comfort my poor little baby. She ran right by me, picked up her blankie, and buried her face in it. Ouch.
Needless to say, the blankie is ready for a good cleaning by the time laundry day rolls around (usually much sooner than that actually). While my mom was in town C soiled her blanket in the night and despite my best tactical efforts, I was unable to retrieve the blanket for a washing until a couple of days had gone by. I know, it's disgusting. Enough was enough. It was time to make another one. I was careful to buy the exact same fabric, the exact same trim for the edge, and the exact same yarn to tie the quilt. With my mom's help, we made a duplicate.
The original is in the top left, with the duplicate next to it. We also had enough fabric left over to make two little baby blankets.
Sometimes we use one for O.
But mostly, we use them for Ross Keon. What? That's his name.
Check his birth certificate if you don't believe me.
Anyway, enough about Ross. The point of the story is that C could not be fooled. D put her to bed with the fake one a few nights ago and she cried and cried and cried some more. I finally realized she didn't have "the original," tracked it down, and took it up to her. She stopped crying immediately and went to sleep. She's a smart little cookie.
We've had some good fun over the whole blankie obsession. It never gets old to take her blanket and cuddle with it causing her to drop whatever she's doing and tear across the room at full speed screaming "MINES!" Adorable. Come over and try it sometime.
Amazing that she could tell the difference! Hard to duplicate grandma's touch I guess. Such adoreable pics of Lollie. Heeth tho sthweet.
ReplyDeleteWe have a favorite blankie around here too, she can't go to sleep without it...Claire is looking so much older and so cute, I love her little pigtails. And Bethany have you always been so domestic?? I don't remember you ever sewing me anything.
ReplyDeleteWow, who ever would have thought it? Could it be the "feel" of the fabric that made the difference? Maybe she could be fooled if you washed the new blanket a few times and put extra fabric softener in it to make the fabric feel more "used" and give it to her in the dark! I'm flattered! For once I chose the right fabric! but I'm sorry for the pain it causes! CUTE, CUTE little kids. I miss you all.
ReplyDeleteWhy am I anonymous?
ReplyDeleteHow cute is that Beth! Claire is simply adorable and Oliver is so precious! You have some great kids there. I was glad to hear that your mom was in town, I bet that you enjoyed having her there:) Miss ya!
ReplyDeleteDid you or Dallan ever have a Blankie or doll or something?

LOL! YES, this is normal. My dad used to do it to me with my blankie, or so he says. Entertainment for hours. I, too, did not like the "imposter" at first when my mom attempted to replace the original, but after a while it was either the "imposter" or nothing, so I guess I learned to love it. The stuffing in the other one was falling out anyway. Isn't it funny the attachment kids have to inanimate objects?
